Pony express museum - sT. JOSEPH, MISSOURI

September 5, 2008

Dinner was in Kansas City, Kansas at Famous Dave's BBQ we had the All American Special for 2 (bbq pork, chicken, and ribs) - our favorite sauce was "Georgia Mustard". The Pony Express Museum in St. Joseph was located a short distance north of Kansas City. Pony Express only ran for about a year and a half delivering mail from St. Joseph to Sacramento, CA. The trip took 10 days in good weather, 15-16 days in bad weather. A driver would ride for 100 miles at a time, changing horses every 10-15 miles. With the invention of the telegraph, Pony Express went bankrupt.

john wayne's birthplace and bridges of madison county - winterset, iowa

Winterset was a really neat "All-American" town one of the nicest you would ever visit. Our campground was located next to the City Park (every small town we encountered had a "city park"). The grounds were immaculately manicured. Yargo and I took a three mile hike in the park up through the forested trails to a "tower" overlooking the city.

mount rushmore and custer state park - black hills of south dakota

Needles Highway is a 14-mile road that traverses through the forests of Custer State Park. The road's name comes from the needle-like granite formations that rise up through the forest towards the sky. We saw a great deal of wildlife out in the open grassland and encountered tunnels so narrow they were very difficult to navigate through. Leaving Custer State Park we rounded a curve to a magnificent view of Mount Rushmore.
