DANUBE River Cruise July 2023

It’s a month after Madeira, and we are on the move with Dick’s daughter again, this time on a river cruise down the Danube River between Nuremberg, Germany and Budapest, Hungary! This trip was supposed to happen three years ago as a retirement celebration vacation, but covid had us locked down. River cruising was new to us and it was certainly different than an ocean cruise. One of the biggest surprises was the number of locks we traveled through. There were several that lifted us “up” before the Continental Water Divide, but after that the locks lowered us as we traveled to Budapest.

We flew to Nuremberg to pick up our ship, Avalon’s ‘View’. Little did we know, we’d only be on that boat for a few days due to low water levels downstream. After visiting Nuremberg, Roth, and Regensburg, we were to continue on to Passau. Our cruise director was cautiously optimistic on embarkation day that the ship would be able to navigate the lower waters through Passau, but that was not the case. The announcement was made we would be doing a “ship swap” with the View’s sister ship, ‘Impression’. It was an identical ship, three years older. We would pick up our new ship in Linz. The crew handled all the logistics, moved our luggage, and made the change quite seamless.

The day of the swap, we were scheduled for a bus tour to Cesky Krumlov, a town in the Czech Republic. We left from the View, and returned to the Impression. Quite simple, same room number, same layout, but different crew. We were sad to leave the crew on the View as they were super friendly and funny.

Cesky Krumlov was one of our most favorite towns we visited. The town is totally surrounded by the Vltava River and has a castle in the historic center that has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walking around the old town through its narrow cobblestone streets, and eating traditional food made for a great day!

Next up was sailing to Melk, Austria. We visited Melk Abbey (also a World Heritage Site) in the morning and sailed through the Wachau Valley in the afternoon. Just before dinner we arrived in Vienna. What is the best thing to do in Vienna (world’s capital of music) in the evening? Do as the locals do and go see a Classical Music Concert! We all got dressed up and headed out to the Vienna Supreme Orchestra, it sure was interesting to say the least!

Budapest was our most FAVORITE town on the cruise! After touring the city with a local guide, we went on a “foodie” site seeing tour. We did more walking and tram riding than actually eating. Not good. The best local dish we had was called langosh, to us Hungarian pizza! It was made with deep fried dough, with added toppings of sour cream, garlic, onions, and goat cheese.

The highlight of our trip was the illumination evening cruise around Budapest. The views were absolutely amazing, nothing better than sitting on the top deck of the boat, with beautiful weather, seeing all the bridges and buildings lit up. It was the perfect way to end our great vacation!
