Natural Bridges Natural Monument

After making our way up the Moki Dugway, we headed north on Highway 261 and took a quick detour to visit Natural Bridges. The Bridge View loop around was only 9 miles so we were able to get to each bridge fairly quickly, but we had to hike a short distance after parking to see two of them. The three natural bridges (Sipapu, Kachina, and Owachomo) represent three stages of life: youth, maturity, and old age. We debated whether or not to stop here but were glad we did. The park was really nice, the sandstone rock formations contained such radiant colors, and the vegetation/landscape was beautiful!

SIPAPU BRIDGE

The first stop along the loop was the Sipapu Bridge. This bridge represents "maturity" as it is the highest (220 ft.) and greatest in span (268 ft.). The trail to the view point to see the bridge was very short.

KACHINA BRIDGE

The Kachina Bridge was next along the loop. It is sometimes called the "middle" bridge because it is between the Sipapu Bridge and the Owachomo Bridge. This bridge will continue to enlarge as flood waters are still flowing beneath it therefore, it represents "youth".

OWACHOMO BRIDGE

The Owachomo Bridge is the "old" age bridge as streams no longer erode the bridge opening. This bridge is the smallest of all three bridges at 106ft in height with a 180 ft. span. Frost and seeping moisture may have created a fatal crack as the bridge only has a 9 ft. thickness. Time will tell whether the bridge stands.
