SLOVENIA/CROATIA 2011

To celebrate our 10th anniversary, we visited Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia. When we arrived in Milan, and picked up our car, the rental company noticed Dick's license was expired. So, guess who did the driving? Imagine it being 30 years since driving a stick shift and being in a foreign country. Driving through Italy was nerve-wracking to say the least, they are crazy drivers. As I tell everyone, there was no "love" in SLOVENIA for us after that. A Slovenian tourist office gave us a bottle of local wine and told us to go get the "love" back after we told them what happened. They were great! Once we got into Slovenia and Croatia, driving was easy. Slovenia was absolutely beautiful. We stayed with the locals on their farms. The countryside was amazing. In northern Slovenia, we took a 12-hour day trip hiking through the Julian Alps, river rafting on the Soca River, and riding a "primitive" car train through the mountains back to Bled. What an experience. Awesome day trip! We drove from Slovenia into Croatia and stopped at Plitvice Lakes National Park on our way to the coast. The lakes and hiking trails were gorgeous. Our hotel on the Croatian coast had a balcony overlooking the bay with great views. Great seafood too!

Venice, ItalyVenice (Venezia) is a very interesting, unique, huge, “pedestrian” city. It is an island (actually 118 islands) full of canals and alleyways. No automobiles are allowed in Venice so your mode of transportation is water taxi and foot. It is VERY easy to get lost walking around Venice, even with a map. Frustrating at times.
Ljubljana, SloveniaLjubljana is the capital of Slovenia, very picturesque with a beautiful Old City. The Ljubljanica River flows through the center of town many bridges cross the river, the most famous is the Tromostovje (triple) bridge. Situated on the banks of the river are outdoor cafes, shops, and restaurants. The city center hosts events, performances, and musical festivals year round.
Plitvice Lakes National Park,CroatiaPlitvice Lakes National Park is the most popular attraction in Croatia. It lies near the center of Croatia, in the Lika region. The natural beauty of the park is amazing. There are 16 blue-green lakes, separated by natural dams of travertine. Waterfalls and cascades connect the lakes. The color of the lakes can be azure, green, grey, or blue, dictated by the minerals and/or organisms in the water and the angle of the sunlight. The hiking trails are full of colorful trees, flowers, and traverse around the lakes. Animal life such as bears, wolves, deer, boar, rabbits, foxes and badgers inhabit the park along with 120 species of birds.
