SOUTHERN CARIBBEAN 2005

We flew to Puerto Rico to begin our cruise of the Southern Caribbean. On our final approach to the San Juan airport, we flew over a bridge that was lined with American flags and Puerto Rican flags on each side. It was truly a view we will not forget. The night before our cruise we met a group of New Yorkers at the hotel pool and partied until 4am. Dick was in heaven - NOT! You can imagine what our heads felt like when we were picked up at 7am by the tour company taking us on our day trip to the El Yunque Rain Forest. We boarded our ship (Adventure of the Seas – Royal Caribbean) that evening for our seven day cruise that took us to Aruba, Curacao, St. John, St. Marteen, and St. Thomas. The first night at dinner we met another couple from New York and spent the week with them. We rented a car in each port and were able to really visit the islands. A week full of fun, dancing, and of course eating!

CURACAO

Curacao, a Dutch Island, is located just off the Venezuelan coast and has a land area of 171 sq miles. Our ship docked in Willemstad, and we took a short ferry ride from the port across the water to shops and restaurants. Curacao is known for its great scuba diving and beautifully painted pastel buildings. Weather is always great as it is outside the "hurricane zone".

ST MARTEEN

St. Marteen, located approx 150 miles SE of Puerto Rico, is a 37 square mile island composed of two different cultures. On one side you have the Dutch and the other side you have the French. Each side is quite different, with their own distinctive characteristics.

ARUBA

Aruba is located 27 km off the coast of Venezuela and has a land area of 69 square miles. Unlike most Caribbean islands, Aruba's climate is dry, lending it to an arid landscape, very flat and desert like, full of cactus. We drove through very poor neighborhoods. Located on the island's north shore is a Natural Bridge, formed from limestone.

ST THOMAS

St. Thomas is only 32 square miles in size, and has unbelievable beauty. We took a taxi to the top of Charlotte Amalie, for an outstanding view of the Caribbean. This island was the most mountainous, tropical island we visited. St John was a short boat ride away.
